Fourth Ward in Uptown Charlotte is one of the most beautiful, and definitely one of the most unique, parts of town. The city limits originally were not even the entire district now found inside the I-277 and I-77 loop. The Square at Trade and Tryon was the center of town, and still is, and those two streets divided the city into 4 wards, First, Second, Third, and Fourth. Each ward is different in terms of property mix, level of density, and overall "feel".
First Ward is seeing a lot of new development and is mostly residential with some office mixed in, a good many parking lots, a handful of restaurants, and the Bobcats Basketball Arena.
Second Ward is home to many of our government buildings -- Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools have offices there, the Courthouses and the Jail are on Trade, the government building which houses city and county departments in here as well. There is almost no residential in Second Ward but there are a few large hotels.
Third Ward is home to Bank of America Stadium, many office high-rises as well as residential high-rises. Parking lots area also everywhere in Third Ward.
Fourth Ward is home to the most surviving original Uptown homes, most of them from the Victorian era, with many condo projects and townhomes thoughout as well. A couple beautiful surviving examples of 1920's aparment buildings are in Fourth Ward, The Frederick and The Poplar, a large number of turn-of-the-century commercial buildings have survived as well. Fourth Ward Park is in the heart of the neighborhood as is Settler's Cemetary (with some graves dating back to the 1700's).
OK, so you aren't actually there, but this photo tour should at least give you an idea how this great neighborhood in Uptown Charlotte looks and feels!
These photos are from various walks through the neighborhood, from friends, and at times taken from public domain (historic photos). Enjoy!
